Youth Development Day

The 2024 Victorian Surf Rowers League Youth Development Day saw over 60 of Victoria’s current and prospective U19 and U23 surf boat athletes converge at Pt Roadknight Beach for a day of workshops, talks and mock racing.

The states sweeps and senior rowers came in droves to put time back into the future of the sport, leading skill-based stations including covering safe surf skills, racing techniques and technical review of the rowing stroke. A ‘youth day champion’ award was presented at the culmination of the days events to Mordialloc LSC’s Austin ‘Gruff’ Edwards for championing the VSRL youths on the day by being inclusive, passionate and helpful.

We thank all the volunteers and junior athletes in attendance, the VSRL panel and Youth Committee, as well as LSV and the ASRL for their commitment to youth engagement and excellence in surf boat rowing.

State Team Presentation – Jan Juc SLSC

The Victorian State Team Representatives were decided over the three carnivals held in:

  • Ocean Grove – December 17 2023
  • Warrnambool – January 7 2024
  • Jan Juc – January 20 2024

The best of three competitions saw some quality racing with tight results in some age categories.

The formal recognition of this team was held after the VSRL Open carnival with special guest speaker Naantali Marshall, who spoke on her experiences representing Victoria over numerous years. A Professional Uncle Toby’s and Nutrigrain Iron Women, Naantali recently won the Lifesaving Victoria Masters Athlete of the Year award and had a clean sweep at the 2023 Australian Champs.

Naantali spoke on how important it is to be one with your team and really engage with your competition environment.

The VSRL are extremely proud of the epic group representing Victoria this year, and we can’t wait to see them perform at the 2024 Team Navy ASRL Open on February 16th at Lorne SLSC.
